Creating commercial set builds can feel like a real “race to the finish,” with big visions and tight deadlines. Sometimes days, weeks, or even months’ worth of our work here at Movie Prop Rentals is only used for a few seconds in a commercial. Yet, it is these few brief seconds that are completely necessary for audiences to suspend their disbelief or go along with a particular narrative. A good example of this can be found in our commercial project for the Alliance for Lifetime, starring famous jet car racer Elaine Larsen.

What We Did

The setting included towering light stacks; parked big rigs, trailers, and cars; green spaces; fencing; and a long drag racing strip, shown from an overtop drone vantage point. We built the count-down lights and prepared smoke and fire special effects to enhance the jet car’s takeoff.

A secondary setting was created for the interview portion of the commercial, where Elaine appears to be sitting in a room of jet engines. We wanted this room to feel industrial, with solid gray surroundings that weren’t too flashy. The main attention should be on Elaine and what she’s saying.

Insider Perspective

“No matter how big or how small the job is, we’re happy to lend our expertise,” says Movie Prop Rentals’ Jerry Blohm. “In this case, it was a quick second of screen time, but it’s enough to leave an impression with the viewer.”

“It was definitely a thrill to be around these loud, flashy jet cars,” adds Graylan Franklin. “The mind imagines a certain reality that can be hard to capture on film. So we have special effects that add a little bit of extra pop and pizzazz to bring the video version in line with the conceptualized imaginings. Honestly, though, we didn’t need to do much to bring it all together. Still, we’re fortunate to add that little special something to your shoot. Maybe it’s something you know you want, or maybe it’s something you haven’t quite figured you need yet.”

“We’re masters of bringing dreams to light and making it all look real,” adds Jerry, “whether it’s a prop, an effect, lighting, a set build-out, or whatever.”
