What They Wanted
Morning Star wanted a brief-but-heartwarming ad to spotlight the idea that their meat alternative products are not just for health-conscious women – but for kids and grown men, too!
They approached Movie Prop Rentals in April 2019 with a fairly straightforward request: to make a kids’ food truck that “should feel like the kids made it themselves out of plywood, fences, aluminum, and bike tires.”
Green was the predominant color in keeping with the natural, healthy brand, but vivid splashes of teal, yellow, and different textures were also welcome. The branded sign needed to look clear and professional.
“Overall, the truck should have homemade charm,” they said.
We think we delivered!
What We Did
We designed and fabricated this little beauty of a food truck in just three days’ time! As you can see, it looks remarkably like the digital agency mockup we submitted during the consult. Everyone fell in love with it, especially the little actress “entrepreneur” who got to work the truck.
We also had to procure a few additional food trucks to make the cityscape look legitimate, though these couldn’t be too flashy or in direct competition with our little girl’s Morning Star truck.
A ketchup bottle, a mustard bottle, a spatula, and a stack of napkins later, and we were ready to shoot with Seth Townsend and Andres Sanchez!

“Once we got to work, it was a short-and-sweet weekend project!” says artistic director Jerry Blohm. “In the few seconds where you see the truck on screen, you’d never guess it wasn’t a real, drivable, pint-sized food truck. We love the movie magic aspect of set design, tricking the eye to believe what you want it to believe.”
“Getting the truck right was the biggest part of the project,” recalls lead manager Graylan Franklin. “Yet, with commercials, the challenge is always to keep the rest of the background painstakingly simple enough that you never forget the product at center stage.”
