About the Ads
In 2014, we worked on a series of ads for Nintendo’s Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire along with Leo Burnett and The Mill, which handled much of the heavy lifting and the post-production work. (Here’s one, and here is another.) Directors included Nick Lines, Andrew Proctor, Chris Palazzo, and Angus Kneale. They were shot in Costa Rica, where we enjoyed vistas, beaches, jungle, and cliff settings. The collaboration was great fun, and we were proud of the results.
What We Did
Movie Prop Rentals created a rich tropical background using natural beaches, trucked-in plants, and custom-designed Pokémon creatures. One of the creatures swoops down and flies over the beach, while the fire Pokémon rises up out of the bushes, and yet another rises up out of the water to show the amazing diversity of characters featured in the Nintendo video game. It’s a quick 16-seconds, but the intro is just enough to hook viewers. Sometimes we’re called upon to place a few props in a room, but this commercial showcases the true movie magic we’re capable of doing.

“If you want volcanoes erupting… yeah, we can do that,” says Art Director Jerry Blohm. “We have to deal with Mother Nature on any given shoot. In this particular one, we battled the torrential downpour of rainy season every day at 2:00 p.m. and early morning shoots to greet the sunrise at 5 a.m. But, yeah, anything that purposefully smokes, explodes, rains down, or bubbles over is my favorite to execute. Special effects bring the wow factor to your production for sure.”
“The other stand-out portion of this short are the creatures, of course,” says Movie Prop Rentals Cofounder Graylan Franklin, “At first glance, you might think those Pokémon characters are full CGI, but we were actually able to make these models using our 3D print and paint shop for far less than it would’ve cost to fully computer animate them. The flying Pokémon prop was built directly in the jungle and puppeteered on a gimbal rig positioned on a spring for more realistic movements. It was really a neat project.”
